About

Hey Howdy!

I'm Jason and I made this art.

For Sale By Jason is a place to share what I make with you as we hurtle together through the universe and explore the vast array of experiences and emotions of existing. I sometimes like to describe what I do as sentimental absurdity or existential whimsy, Whatever you want to call it, it's a way to find joy in an often chaotic world and connect with likeminded people.

Past is prologue

I consider myself a true son of the United States. By the time I was 30 years old I'd lived in nearly 50 homes in 7 states in all corners of the country. My travels revealed the shared light and darkness people of all cultures walk in and out of everyday. I kept moving, looking for something that always felt just outside my reach and it wasn't until I started looking inside myself that I found it.

Back in the saddle

Since I was a kid I've been intrigued by advertising and signage, and the messages communicated to us through the media about who we are or who we're supposed to be. I spent 20 years of my adult life doing graphic design on and off (but had mostly quit because I didn't like being a tool for other people) and when COVID hit I started making art for myself for the first time since I was little.

I focused on not censoring myself and just letting the ideas out and started making work in a sort of anti-design way. I leaned in to what I liked about it–the language, the color, the balance–and left out the pomp and perfectionism. With my handwritten text and naive illustrations, a style started to quickly form.

As I continue to create I'm inspired by themes of joy, suffering, determination, self-love, and absurdity. More silly than serious, I'm going to keep working to answer the age-old questions, "Why am I here and what the fuck is going on?"

The Prints

All of my work starts as pen on paper and is then colored and composed digitally before I do the printing and packaging myself.

I take the quality of the prints people buy from me seriously. I use archival pigmented inks on museum-grade fine art paper. The colors are vivid, the paper is heavyweight and beautifully textured, and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

What's Next?

People often ask me where I get my ideas and I usually tell them I am conduit for the nonsense of the universe. So I will keep cannonballing into the river of the unconscious to see what I find below the surface.

What I come up with is anyone's guess, but I'll be working on new prints, original paintings, books, and Magic Boomerangs™. Stay tuned.
